This exhibition is dedicated to transformation: industrial culture as a force for identity, Chemnitz's turbulent history with its ruptures and new beginnings, and the current processes of change and experiences of other cities with a similar past. It invites us to reflect on change, on the scope for action, and on the future.
Five color-coded themes demonstrate what once made transformation necessary – and still makes it necessary today. At five tall chimneys, European partner cities present their own industrial and transformation histories. Five scaffoldings bring current change to life at exemplary locations in Chemnitz.
The exhibition's centerpiece is the installation "Tradition and Future" – a 270° spatial experience that impressively visualizes Chemnitz's transformation. It provides an outlook on the current and future necessities and opportunities for change. Visitors vote on concrete future options for real places. The votes are counted every hour on the hour, resulting in a democratically modeled vision of the future: Chemnitz in 2050.
